Today I was remembering the strawbale dinner we hosted here a few months ago. There was a strawbale workshop being held in Oak Creek by Chris Magwood, a Canadian who has built scores of strawbale homes and written 2 books. Our house is featured in the second book, “More Straw Bale Building”, a Mother Earth publication. About 20 people attended his 2-day workshop, visiting and working on three homes under construction. On Sunday evening, we hosted a potluck dinner for the group.
Chris wanted the folks to see an “upper-end” strawbale home, since most are smaller and simpler in design. The kitchen is always a central part of a good home and ours is certainly that. With a large work island, it was no problem fitting in most of the group, leaving room for food prep. There is a “flow” about the floor plan of the house that makes gatherings so easy and comfortable to have. After dinner, we had a discussion on strawbale and its benefits. The workshop was a great opportunity for the attendees to see strawbale in various steps of construction and visit a finished home. Perhaps the most common phrase one hears, in a positive way, is, “There’s something about a straw bale home ….”

The decision to sell the ranch hasn’t been an easy one. After years of living in fixer-uppers, this was the first home we designed and built, and we love it. The architect who helped us design it has become one of our best friends, and we have great neighbors here in Oak Creek. Our views — of Young’s Peak, of the Stagecoach reservoir and of Steamboat Springs ski area are incomparable. But our kids are settling on the West Coast, and increasingly our work connections are there as well, so we’ve decided to relocate. This blog is our way of sharing with you all that we love about life at Lynx Basin Ranch, and in the incredible communities of Oak Creek and Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
